UNALASKA, ALASKA FIRE CHIEF
Unalaska, AK (pop. 4,768) Unique, beautiful and dynamic Unalaska is seeking a visionary and collaborative leader to become its next Fire Chief. Situated in the Aleutian Chain 800 miles southwest of Anchorage, Unalaska is the 12th largest city in Alaska, the largest the Aleutians, and home to the International Port of Dutch Harbor. The Port consistently ranks first or second in the nation for the size and value of its seafood catch. The City of Unalaska is a well-financed and professionally run organization, staffed by hardworking, talented and successful people. It is governed under the Council-Manager form, with an elected Mayor and City Council and an appointed professional City Manager. The Fire Chief is responsible for overseeing administration of the Fire and EMS Division of the City’s Department of Public Safety. The Fire Chief functions as Incident Commander during emergency operations, manages Fire/EMS Division grants and capital projects, oversees maintenance of firefighting and EMS equipment, trains and directs Fire/EMS and Communications personnel, and conducts fire investigations. The Chief reports to the Director of Public Safety, who reports to the City Manager.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and experiences:
Two-year degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Business or related field. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Ten years’ experience in the fire service, including five years at the command level. Alaska experience preferred.
The following certifications (or ability to obtain): Alaska Firefighter I & II; FEMA ICS 100,200,300 and 400; Alaska EMT II or equivalent; Alaska Fire Instructor I; Alaska Fire Inspector I; Alaska Commercial Driver’s License. Paramedic certification and ICS Instructor certification preferred.
Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
Strong oral and written communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to fire safety, fire prevention
and departmental policies and procedures.
Knowledge of rescue operations as they pertain to Fire and EMS.
Salary range $77,076 to $123,322; starting salary to midpoint ($100,199) DOQ/E. Attractive benefits package including health insurance (medical, dental, vision, audio) at no cost to employees and dependents, and participation in the Alaska Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Alaska does not have a state income tax.
