Job Description:

Job duties:

  • Serves as the shift commander with the overall responsibility of all shift activities
  • Serves as the initial incident commander of emergency incidents and determines the strategy/tactics required
  • Serves as logistics officer and participates in several committees

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by training in fire services programs; an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; and must complete required coursework and maintain required certifications as issued by the S.C. Fire Academy and S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control
  • National Fire Protection Association Firefighter I; Firefighter II; Hazardous Material Awareness; Hazardous Material Operation; I-100; I-200; I-700; I-800; ICS 300; ICS 400; Basic Auto Extrication; NIMS-ICS for the Fire Service; Flammable Liquids and Gas Firefighting; Emergency Vehicle Driver Training; Pump Operations I;  Fire Instructor I; Fire Officer I; and Incident Safety Officer (all equivalent certifications and S.C. Fire Academy granted equivalencies will be considered to suffice these requirements, and out of state training or college courses not considered by the S.C. Fire Academy will be given equivalency as determined by the fire chief)
  • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license or out of state equivalent and must have a minimum of 10 years of experience as a firefighter
