Position hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, generally. May require additional hours due to staff training or emergency and fire suppression incidents.
Manages, directs, controls, plans and implements a program of fire safety, suppression and prevention for the City of West Columbia; and develops and implements departmental policies, standard operating procedures, and short- and long-range goals and objectives
Plans, develops, schedules and conducts training classes and drills for firefighting personnel; ensures staff is current with firefighting theories and techniques; and ensures the efficient maintenance and readiness of all firefighting vehicles
Makes and reviews work assignments of subordinate staff; conducts performance evaluations; and makes recommendations for promotion, salary increases, dismissals and disciplinary actions
Associate degree or vocational/technical training in fire suppression or related field and 10 years of experience, of which some is supervisory experience in fire and life safety education, prevention, and emergency response work with a municipal or county fire department. Must have knowledge of fire investigation and fire inspection and EMR certification or higher.
Must possess a valid SC driver's license and have certifications in Hazardous Materials Operations, Incident Command, Incident Safety Officer, Fire Officer I and II, National Firefighter I and II, and Technical Rescue
Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Pay info: $66,781.67 annually or higher depending on qualifications with excellent benefits package including 13 holidays, participation in the state retirement system, the S.C. deferred compensation plan and the state health plan with the employee's health and basic dental insurance premiums paid by the city
